Context

Context
This effort was prompted by the ongoing, grass roots effort of the community to rejuvenate and modernize the city’s prized public space. The project focused on the enhancement of functionality and improved aesthetics of the central square and the nearby Historic Wilson Theater Plaza on Fremont Avenue. Challenges included garnering public support, securing funding, and ensuring that the design honored the historical significance of the area while meeting modern needs.

Process

Process
The project involved a comprehensive master planning and extensive public engagement process to ensure the community supported a monumental change to a space that was last updated in the 1960’s. The Land Group’s strategy included creating a Community Ambassadors program, which educated community members about the design process and engaged them in the planning process with large numbers of community members. Outreach extended to community events such as the county fair and the annual 4th of July Week gatherings to reach and inform large numbers. The thorough engagement culminated in the successful garnering of community support and the passing of a public bond measure, securing funding for the improvements.

Solution

Solution
The Land Group provided a detailed master plan that integrated community feedback and included phased implementation along with long term programming guidance. The detailed design included improvements to pedestrian access, reconfiguration of event space, and the enhancement of the central fountain as a new community focal point. Securing additional funding through successful Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) applications and private donations was pivotal in bringing the plan to fruition. The collaborative approach ensured the project addressed community needs while preserving the area’s historical essence.
