Context
Context
The Boise State University Alumni and Friends Center was envisioned as a place where alumni could reconnect with the university, build upon longstanding traditions, and create lasting memories. Situated at the intersection of South Denver Avenue and West University Avenue, the site design needed to balance spaces for large public events and smaller, intimate gatherings. A key aspect of the project was preserving the mature maple and ash trees along South Denver Avenue and integrating artistic and symbolic elements that reflect Boise State’s legacy.
Process
Process
The Land Group partnered with Boise State University to design a multi-functional outdoor space that complements the Alumni and Friends Center’s purpose and aesthetic. The project included identifying key event spaces and working with local artists to incorporate meaningful art installations. The team prioritized sustainable design principles, such as preserving existing trees and using permeable pavers to manage stormwater. Throughout the process, The Land Group ensured that the design met the university’s goals for functionality, environmental stewardship, and celebration of its community's achievements.

The final design features distinct spaces for different uses, including a large, open area along West University Drive for major events and a semi-private courtyard for small group gatherings. Highlights of the courtyard include a 6-piece Totem by local artist Rod Kogan, a bronze cast of the university’s seal, and donor-engraved brick pavers. The preservation of existing trees and the use of permeable pavers demonstrate a commitment to sustainability while enhancing the site’s overall functionality and aesthetics.
