Context
Context
For years, downtown Boise has steadily improved its streetscapes to create a unique, walkable urban core. Fulton Street, located between 9th Street and Capitol Boulevard, remained one of the last undeveloped sections, limiting connectivity in an integral part of downtown Boise. The project was envisioned as an opportunity to strengthen pedestrian access, support retail activation, and create a welcoming space. Unique challenges included fitting modern infrastructure and sustainable strategies into an established downtown environment while ensuring the design aligned with broader city streetscape standards.
Process
Process
The Land Group built upon previous planning efforts and facilitated extensive stakeholder and public outreach to shape the project’s direction. Concept design alternatives were developed, shared, and refined with input from community members and downtown partners. TLG advanced the design into construction documentation and coordinated with city agencies and CCDC to ensure the project vision was delivered effectively. This collaborative and transparent process allowed the design to balance community priorities, technical requirements, and long-term urban goals.
Solution
Solution
Fulton Street created a pedestrian-oriented streetscape that integrated ecological sustainability with urban vibrancy. Broad, shaded sidewalks now accommodate on-street cafés, expanding retail potential while enhancing the urban tree canopy. A full right-of-way repaving improved accessibility throughout the corridor, ensuring compliance with mobility standards for all users. Sustainable design strategies were embedded into the project, including stormwater management systems and street tree plantings that contribute to long-term environmental performance.
Impact
Impact
The completion of Fulton Street improvements has elevated connectivity and walkability in downtown Boise. The streetscape supports economic activation by creating flexible spaces for cafés, events, and retail, while simultaneously enhancing environmental resilience through tree canopy expansion and stormwater strategies.
