Located in one of Idaho’s fastest-growing cities, Discovery Park was envisioned as a regional hub that celebrates nature, community, and play. With views of the Boise foothills and Owyhee Range, the park serves as a recreational destination while simultaneously reflecting Idaho’s landscapes and identity. Discovery Park balances diverse uses, from quiet trails to large event venues.

The Land Group developed a master plan for the entire 77 acres, weaving together recreational features, educational elements, and natural areas into one cohesive design. Careful attention was given to safety, including thoughtful placement of climbing and play structures that met fall-protection standards. Additionally, during design, the team had to accommodate the safety and engineering challenges posed by the existing Williams gas pipeline running through the site. The design team collaborated with the city to create a flexible park environment that could function as “four parks in one,” offering year-round opportunities for different types of use.

Solution
The design addressed site and safety challenges while maximizing community use. The Williams pipeline corridor was avoided through careful layout, and fall-protection surfaces ensured safe play around climbing and active areas. Idaho-themed features, such as the climbing wall map and reservoir sand park, tied the park to local identity while meeting educational goals. Flexible spaces like the amphitheater, event lawn, and gardens provide space for community events, food trucks.
