Boise State University envisioned a state-of-the-art facility that would elevate its visual arts programs while creating a recognizable landmark for campus and the broader community. Following four years of collaboration among the university, design team, and public stakeholders, the Center for the Visual Arts broke ground in 2017. The 98,000-square-foot facility consists of two interconnected buildings that house studios, galleries, classrooms, faculty offices, and administrative spaces. The project site presented challenges including high groundwater conditions, complex pedestrian circulation requirements, and the need to seamlessly integrate the new facility into an active university campus.

The Land Group worked closely with the architectural and ownership team to develop a site design which celebrated the building's distinctive form while enhancing the campus experience. The design focused on creating a strong sense of arrival, improving pedestrian connectivity, and establishing outdoor gathering spaces that support collaboration and social interaction. Site grading, ADA accessibility, material selection, furnishings, and circulation patterns were carefully coordinated to accommodate multiple building thresholds and connect the facility with existing campus pathways and destinations.

The landscape design draws the eyes and feet of users into central courtyards and gathering spaces through a network of expanded walkways that connect to surrounding academic buildings and major pedestrian corridors. A simple, linear planting palette complements the minimalist architectural expression while creating visual continuity throughout the site. To address high groundwater conditions and manage stormwater sustainably, the design incorporated permeable pavers and an underground stormwater vault system that treats runoff from the building and parking areas. Vehicular traffic and parking were placed along the perimeter to minimize conflicts with pedestrian movement and maximize the functionality of outdoor gathering spaces.
