Context

Context
The Idaho Youth Ranch, a nonprofit serving at-risk youth, sought to relocate its operations from rural Minidoka County Idaho to the Treasure Valley to be closer to the families of the youth they serve and program support networks. The Hands of Promise Campus in Middleton offered the ideal setting, secluded enough for residential counseling yet expansive enough to support animal-assisted therapy, recreation, and educational programs. The scale of the project, combined with the need for diverse facilities and community partnerships, required a thoughtful, long-term plan.

Process

Process
Working in collaboration with Idaho Youth Ranch leadership, The Land Group facilitated a comprehensive planning process. This process began with site and environmental assessments, program development, facility needs analysis, and agency entitlement coordination. With an understanding of the site opportunities and constraints, and desired program elements, we lead design charrette workshops with IYR staff to establish initial conceptual site plans and establish preliminary budgets. Collaboration expanded and evolved to include partner architects and contractors, ensuring an integrated and wholistic approach to the plan.

Solution

Solution
The resulting master plan establishes a hierarchy of zones to allow for public, semi-public, and private/programs space allowing for a dynamic and flexible facility. This flexibility allows for ongoing partnerships with the community. The plan solves the complex challenges of a secure treatment center, which includes equine therapy and active agriculture. Critical infrastructure solutions included new potable and fire protection wells, wastewater septic treatment systems, and solar energy integration. The master plan also accommodated future growth, with spaces for community partnerships, therapy programs, and special events.

Impact

Impact
The Hands of Promise Campus is the current home of the Idaho Youth Ranch Residential Center for Healing & Resilience, which provides long-term psychiatric care to youth ages 11-17 in a unique environment carefully designed for a therapeutic experience. This program is transforming the way Idaho provides care to at-risk youth. For the first time, children no longer need to leave the state for residential treatment, allowing them to stay close to families and support systems.. The project reflects more than a decade of planning vision and collaboration, resulting in a landmark facility that strengthens the future of Idaho’s youth.
